It is home to the largest employers in the region, Walmart DC#6092 and St. Margaret's Health, ranked by a leading consumer magazine as a Top Hospital for Surgery in Illinois. Seven businesses have reached centennial status, including Spring Valley City Bank, Western Sand & Gravel, Cosgrove's Candy & Foods, Barto Funeral Home, St. Margaret's Health, Mautino Distributing and Verucchi's Italian Ristorante.

Spring Valley is bordered to the south by the Illinois River. It has become known as the ''Sauger Capital of the World'' and has annually hosted the Cabela's Masters Walleye Fishing Tournament for over 35 years. Barto Landing, draws boaters from miles around to provide access to approximately 50 miles of river without traversing locks. Cargill and ADM facilities are situated here.
