    JOB SUMMARY:
    On their assigned day, the Meals on Wheels Driver delivers meals to home-bound individuals within their assigned route. As the MOW Driver delivers the meals, the position checks to see if the client is okay and report back any unusual circumstances. In this way, the position serves as a link between the VAC and the client.
     
    POSITION CONTEXT:
    The MOW Driver is a part-time position under the direct supervision of the Meals on Wheels Program Manager. The position works mostly in an agency vehicle performing fieldwork and occasionally in an office/kitchen environment.

     
    EXAMPLES OF MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
    • Loads prepared meals and equipment into vehicle according to established procedures
    • Delivers meals to clients homes according to predetermined route structure
    • Collects and returns equipment to a central location(s)
    • Notify appropriate staff of any problems or client needs
    • Notify appropriate staff in advance if unable to deliver on an assigned day
    • Advises supervisor of client delivery records, noting any location and schedule changes observed during delivery and serving, if appropriate
    • A mandatory reporter for elder abuse and/or neglect under the Illinois Adult Protective Services Act
    • Other duties as assigned
    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
    Knowledge of:
    • Topography, roads, streets, development, and neighborhoods of program routes
    • Record-keeping procedures
    • Customer service practices and procedures.
    • Rules, regulations, practices, and procedures affecting safety driving
    Skills:
    • Verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to work closely and cooperatively with fellow employees.
    • Excellent customer service and people skills
    • Attention to detail must be extremely detailed oriented.
    Ability to:
    • Learn the activities and procedures related to the duties and responsibilities of the position

    • Work cooperatively with other VAC employees, and the public
    • Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others
    WORKING CONDITIONS:
    The working environment is mostly done in agency delivery vehicles with some work performed in the agency office. The noise level varies but is generally moderate to loud. Some exposure to the elements is required.

     
    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
    Physical ability to perform essential job functions including, but not limited to, sitting for extended periods of time, standing, walking, stooping and bending, pushing / pulling / lifting up to 30 lbs., and climbing (stairs). Performs duties in outside exposed weather of extreme cold or heat or wet and humid conditions. Some vibration and moderate exposure to mechanical parts. Vision and hearing unimpaired or correctable to minimum requirements of IL drivers license. Must meet the medical requirements of a physical exam process.

     
    EQUIPMENT USED:
    Agency vehicles are used in the transportation of home-delivered meals, as well as temperature-controlled delivery containers and/or bags, and other items.

    QUALIFICATIONS:
    Education: High school diploma or equivalent is required.
    Experience: No experience is necessary, but familiarity with the dynamics of the delivery of meals is a plus.  A clean driving record is required, and an Illinois Drivers License is required within 30 days of hire.  Must pass physical and be at least 21 years of age.
